SteamOS, a Debian-based distribution developed by Valve to be used in its hybrid PC / console, has been updated yet again, but this time it's the stable version.

The previous update for SteamOS brought the much needed support for AMD graphic cards, and now that has been improved with a new version of the drivers.

“We have just updated the alchemist release with the alchemist_beta contents. All the changes which were only in alchemist_beta are now released to everyone. Existing SteamOS installs should update themselves automatically.”

“Notably, Intel and AMD graphics are now supported. (Optimus solutions are still unsupported however),” reads the official announcement from Valve.

Highlights of SteamOS 1.0 Build 01.08.14:

• The Steam controller firmware upgrade process has been fixed; • The AMD Catalyst driver has been updated to the preview release 13.11 Beta 9.9; • A number of crashes on Intel graphics have been fixed by merging Keith Packard's dri2-xlib branch: • An fbcon kernel panic with Intel graphics has been fixed; • A problem where SteamOS session screenshots taken by the Valve bug reporter would be incorrect has been corrected; • Full repaints have been enabled in the GNOME compositor for reliable tear-free rendering; • The startup and shutdown hooks have been removed from the pulseaudio package, fixing the transition to system-wide mode on upgrade; • Intel graphics stack has been upgraded to Mesa 10.0.1; • A problem where Trine 2 could cause audio to stop working by restricting direct audio access to the sound server has been fixed; • NTP time support has been added.

Check the official announcement for more details about this release. You can download SteamOS 1.0 Build 01.08.14 right now from Softpedia. Keep in mind that, even if this is a stable release, some bugs might still be present.

If you used to employ the Beta version, this update will make your system stable again, at least until the next update to the Beta build.
