A new Steam hardware survey has been published

Valve has published the results of the Steam Hardware Survey for March, and it looks like Steam for Linux is again rising, although it is difficult to say if it's something permanent or just a simple spike up the graph.

Valve publishes details about Steam usage for the previous month, and one of the categories covered by the survey relates to the operating system used by the players. The Steam for Linux slice of the pie has been hovering around 1% almost since the start, and it doesn't seem to change, at least not in a dramatic sense.

Not all of the Steam users get the survey, and there is no information about how many get to complete the survey. Also, it's quite possible that many users may get the survey while using the Windows version, despite them having a Linux OS installed as well (the opposite situation is less likely).

Steam for Linux is rising, again

The Steam for Linux market share was rising slowly for the past six month, but in February it dropped significantly. It's hard to determine why that happened, but the Linux platform is rising again in March, which is a good sign. In fact, March has been a very good month for Linux users, which found out that great games like Batman or Bioshock Infinite are getting Linux ports.

Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS 64-bit takes the first place with 0.31%, Ubuntu 14.10 64-bit goes on the second with 0.15%, and the third place is occupied by Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca 64-bit, which is also on the rise.

If you want to help increase the Steam for Linux share, make sure that you stay logged into the Linux client and that you allow the survey to do its job. All the date is collected anonymously, so there is no reason to fear it.
