Valve’s distribution digital service, Steam seems to have reached another impressive milestone that few thought it to be capable of in such a short time.

During January 1, no less than 8.5 million users have logged in on Steam to play their favorite games.

Valve's Steam service has been growing at a steady pace in the last couple of years, and by the end of this year it will probably reach 10 million concurrent players with ease.

What’s interesting is the fact that the most players who logged on the same day Steam reached a peak of more than 8 million players were playing Dota 2.

Valve’s MOBA game reached a peak of 879,827 players on January 2. But that’s not that impressive as the fact that the first three top games by current player count are all owned by Valve.

The second place following Dota 2 is none other than Counter-Strike: Global Offensive with a peak of 383,584 players. Team Fortress 2 is third with only 92,606 players at peak.

The top three games by current player count are all Valve's multiplayer titles

Moreover, all three games on top of the list with most players on January 1 are multiplayer games: Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Team Fotress 2. Two of them are available for free, so it kind of makes sense to be played by a large mass of people, while one of them has been discounted during the Steam Holiday Sale.

So, basically, it was Valve and then a few other games that managed for score more 50k players on January 1. It’s surprising that even after such a long time people are still playing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The game reached a peak of 66,956 players last week, while newer titles like Sid Meier’s Civilization V had only 60,092 players.

The rest of the list of games with more than 10k players at peak is pretty interesting and makes us wonder whether or not Valve will want to launch a single-player game (Half-Life 3) anymore since its multiplayer ones are doing so well.
