Valve’s Steam digital distribution service has over 50 million users worldwide, and the Big Picture beta program has accumulated more than 500,000 participants, at least according to Sega.

The Steam service is extremely popular but, besides occasional glimpses into its statistics from Valve itself, the games industry doesn’t really know just how popular Steam is.

Now, Sega’s vice president of digital distribution, John Clark, confirmed, via PCGamesN, during the London Games Conference 2012, that Steam now has more than 50 million users.

What’s more, the recently released beta stage for the service’s Big Picture mode is already very popular, as more than 500,000 people are actively enjoying this new feature.

What’s more, Clark has also mentioned that the Steam Workshop system has over 300,000 items and that more than 106 million community contributions were made for the variety of games sold by Steam.

Considering that Steam is now in a closed beta for the Linux platform, you can expect its number of users to increase exponentially.
