Valve has just revealed an upcoming feature for its Steam digital distribution service called Greenlight, which will allow users of the platform to vote on what games they want to be released on Steam.

Valve’s Steam is the most popular digital download service for the PC and Mac platforms so you can bet that a lot of developers and publishers want to get their games onto it as fast as possible.

Sadly, Valve’s dedicated team isn’t that numerous and this has hampered the process of admitting smaller titles from independent developers.

As such, the company has now presented Steam Greenlight, a new system that allows users of the service to vote on what games they want to see on Steam.

“Steam Greenlight is a new system that enlists the community's help in picking some of the next games to be released on Steam. Developers post information, screenshots, and videos for their game and seek a critical mass of community support in order to get selected for distribution,” Valve said about the new feature.

“Steam Greenlight also helps developers get feedback from potential customers and start creating an active community around their game as early in the development process as they like.”

According to the company, this should lead to a paradigm shift in terms of how customers get to interact with developers and how they shape the game portfolio of Steam.

“For many stores, there is a team that reviews entries and decides what gets past the gates. We're approaching this from a different angle: The community should be deciding what gets released. After all, it’s the community that will ultimately be the ones deciding which release they spend their money on.”

The Steam Greenlight system will be officially released at the end of August.
