Windows Phone's lack of apps might be addressed in the coming years, as more developers are interested in Microsoft's mobile operating system and the opportunity it offers to get more downloads.

Statistics provided by VisionMobile after a survey involving 8,000 mobile app developers show that Windows Phone is currently the third in a chart concerning the developer appeal of mobile platforms.

A total of 30 percent of developers are now building apps for Windows Phone, up from 28 percent in Q3 2014 and from 26 percent in Q1 2014.

Android keeps leading the charts with a 71 percent share among developers, while iOS is second with 54 percent. All top mobile platforms experienced a growth in terms of number of developers creating apps, including BlackBerry, which increased from 11 percent in Q3 2014 to 13 percent in Q1 2015.

Devs still making money with Windows Phone

One of the good things about Windows Phone when it comes to developers is that the lack of popular apps in the store creates additional opportunities for those willing to design alternative solutions that would allow users to still access their favorite services from Microsoft's devices.

Stats show that 50 percent of the developers on Windows Phone are making up to $500 (€440) each month, while 14 percent get as much as $5,000 (€4,400) during the same time frame. In case you're wondering, 4 percent of the devs make between $50,000 (€44,000) and $200,000 (€150,000) every month just because of their successful Windows Phone apps.

The percentage is much higher on iOS, where developers find it much easier to monetize their apps. Only 12 percent of them are making no money out of their apps, but 49 percent make up to $5,000 every month. A total of 8 percent earn around $200,0000 thanks to their apps every month.

With Windows 10, the opportunity of monetizing apps is even bigger because Microsoft would bet more on the concept of universal apps that would allow the same program to run on both desktops and phones with no additional tweaks.
