The open-world zombie survival action-adventure video game State of Decay is getting the remaster treatment, heading for the Xbox One in 1080p sometime in 2015, dubbed State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition.

State of Decay debuted last June on the Xbox 360 computer entertainment system from Microsoft, and it introduced a number of nice tweaks to the already established zombie survival formula.

The story progression wasn’t scripted, you could lose party members permanently, and the game world continued to change even in your absence, even though the game was a single-player affair.

The great spin that developer Undead Labs put on the whole zombie apocalypse genre made the game an instant hit, and a PC release followed suit soon thereafter.

Now, the franchise is looking better than ever, with the Xbox Wire announcing that we’ll see State of Decay in a revamped edition on the Xbox One sometime during the spring of 2015.

The game blends the usual third-person action and survival content of similar titles with some role-playing and strategy elements, putting you in the middle of the zombie apocalypse in an in-depth survival simulation.

Players are able to select where their base of operations is, and then choose which other survivors to recruit to their party and how to put them to work, with gamers having the chance to go on scavenging missions and on incursions where they get to rescue other survivors, or to simply mind their own business and take care of their own survival first.

The simulated world offers all the tools necessary for gamers to write their own story, and to choose how they go about life after the zombie outbreak.

Xbox One owners will be able to experience the definitive edition of the action adventure video game when State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition comes out, including all the content in the original game, rendered in full 1080p resolution, with enhanced animations and effects.

The upcoming re-release of the zombie-smashing title will also include the Breakdown and Lifeline add-on packs, as well as some entirely new content that developer Undead Labs is keeping a tight lid on for the time being.

The dev has promised that more will be revealed regarding the surprise extra content closer to the game’s release, so we’ll keep our ears open and come back with the scoop.

Until then, you can watch the announcement video below, featuring none other than Larry Hryb, Xbox Live’s Major Nelson.
