Here's one animal rescue story to brighten up your week: a few days back, a starving dog was rescued after spending about a month isolated on an island outside Santa Cruz.

The dog was brought to mainland by a firefighter shortly after a local family spotted it and alerted the authorities, sources say.

Although there is no way of knowing how the animal ended up on the island, rescuers suspect that it swam all the way there and later found that it lacked the stamina to journey back to mainland.

The dog is an Australian shepherd mix, and veterinarians say that it is about 12 to 13 years old. While on the island, the dog apparently ate nothing but bird eggs.

“He's not a full spry guy at this point, but he's walking on his own,” an employee of the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter in Live Oak tells the press.

Veterinarians say that, given the proper nourishment and lots of TLC, the dog has high chances of recovering from the ordeal.
