Lightbox and Sony have just released an update for the current Starhawk open beta stage, taking it to version 1.3 and including some nifty additions to the third person shooter.

Starhawk is definitely an interesting game, allowing PlayStation 3 owners to battle it out on alien worlds not just by shooting at one another but also by building structures to defend their positions.

In order to give players a taste of these special mechanics, developer Lightbox has been running a special open beta stage for Starhawk, which is available to all PlayStation 3 owners.

The game’s Senior Producer, Harvard Bonin, has highlighted how important this testing phase was, thanking players on behalf of the studio.

“Since our Starhawk Beta launched in November, we’ve collected so much great info. The bugs found would never been nailed down without your efforts and we are confident we’ll be giving you one of the best online experiences on PS3 with the final version of the game. Many balance and feature changes were made as a direct result of player testing. Please accept a sincere “THANK YOU!” from our team.”

Besides the message above, Bonin also confirmed that update 1.3 for the Starhawk beta is now available, adding quite a few new things, including a 32-player map called Planet Dust, as well as two new vehicles, in the form of a jetbike and a tank.

Check out the three major things included in update 1.3 below.

32 Player Map: Planet Dust If you thought 8 vs 8 was fun, things just got EPIC!

Sidewinder Jetbike

This vehicle is all about speed, speed, and more speed. As it’s a very hard target to hit, use the Sidewinder for quick hit and run attacks, fast road kills, or team up with others to SWARM the enemy base. Did we mention it jumps, too?

Ox Heavy Tank

Say hello to our little friend. What the Ox lacks in speed, it makes up for in pure brawn and firepower. You can destroy enemy walls and structures via long range bombardments, assault mechs with explosive shells, and survive barrages while comfortable nestled in its heavily armored shell. The Starhawk open beta will end on March 27, while the full game is out on May 8. As such, PlayStation 3 owners should definitely consider trying out the shooter until then.
