Money is not tight

The original Stargate and the Atlantis spin off are over and the next series covering the Stargate universe is only set to debut later in the year. In the meantime, fans could use a little help from a videogame to get over the transition period, but it seems that Stargate Worlds, far from being finished, might be in deep trouble.

Brad Wright, who was the producer of the television show, recently said that he was worried about the MMO because the developer had not talked to him in quite some time. He specifically stated that “If it doesn’t happen - and, let's be honest, it should be happening now if it was happening - it’s a shame. They had an opportunity and they got our support, and they obviously had significant funding, and it didn't happen.”

Kevin Balentine, who is the senior marketing manager of FireSky, formerly known as Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, dispelled rumors that the MMO was not doing well, saying that “the lights are still on and Stargate Worlds development continues. Team members are in the office seven days a week to deliver Stargate Worlds.” The company is now negotiating new financing deals that will allow it to finish development and get the game out in late 2009 or in early 2010.

The recent economic crisis has hit the developer particularly hard, with employees not getting paid for a limited period of time. But Balentine believes that problems are now gone and that all those involved in the project are confident that they can create an experience true to the Stargate universe and which will prove interesting to the fans of the series who would like to be part of a SG team in a videogame. Let's hope that the developer manages to create a game in which the rather complex story of the television series is well integrated.
