The creator of the X-Wing series, David Wessman, has just released a brand new video game project on Kickstarter, aiming to deliver a fresh space combat experience.

Wessman has assembled a team of 15 industry veterans with experience working on Far Cry, Crysis, Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries, Halo 3, The Elder Scrolls Online and Homefront, and wants to build something that he describes as "World of Tanks meets Counter-Strike in space."

The crowdfunding campaign for Starfighter Inc. is now live on Kickstarter, with already a fifth of what the company is going for secured in less than a day.

Wessman says that his goal is to capture the intense and immersive feeling of being in the cockpit of a space fighter, to create "the next great space shooter."

The team states that, if they reach the funding goal, they'll be able to produce a title that includes 16-player online matches, with six different ship types to choose from, featuring a full-fledged tactical simulation engine complete with Newtonian physics and an advanced damage model.

Players will also be able to customize their ships, and the Kickstarter pitch even boasts that the options will extend as far as selecting your own cockpit instrumentation layout.

Space combat is a pretty exciting thing

In addition to this, the Kickstarter pitch video, which you can watch below, also shows the team working with an Oculus Rift headset, so it might just feature virtual reality integration, if everything turns out right.

If the studio manages to reach its stretch goals, the player cap will be extended to 32 players and six more ship types will be created, including multi-seat starships that you can share with your friends.

There will also be more game modes to enjoy, including carrier engagement, base assault, and boarding party, but without an actual first-person shooter module.

The campaign runs until June 6, so if you're interested in the idea of Battlestar Galactica-type action, you might as well check it out.
