Players will need to play the game and perform in order to level up

The development team working on the upcoming Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm strategy game announces that it will be introducing a new leveling system to the game, which will offer a number of rewards to players as they progress through the experience.

The official description from Blizzard reads as follows:

“In the Heart of the Swarm leveling system, players earn experience while playing Blizzard matchmaking modes and custom games on Blizzard maps. You’ll earn XP for the race you’re playing with each unit you build or destroy. Experience is awarded at the end of the match, and accumulates as you level up from 1 to a maximum level of 20 for each race.”

It seems that Blizzard is still working on the exact situations that will cause gamers to gain experience, but the system boils down to a situation where playing as much as possible and playing well will lead to experience points that can then be translated into rewards.

Apparently, the developers are thinking about giving gamers more experience for their first win during a day or for playing with a certain build or against a Real ID friend.

When it comes to rewards, Blizzards says that, “The Leveling system is how you will earn most portraits and decals in Heart of the Swarm. We’re creating a multitude of new images for players to collect and display.”

A level based on the player’s performance with all the races will always be displayed next to the portrait in order to give others a quick way of understanding how good the other player is.

Leveling and experience will be added to the beta stage of Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm and wipes are to be expected as Blizzard tweaks the entire system.

The new game in the Starcraft II saga will be launched in 2013 and will focus on the Zerg and on Kerrigan.
