Blizzard has some candy for us, Starcraft fans and it's not even Halloween time yet! It turns out that the producer of the most famous RTS game ever has revealed a new unit from the long-awaited
Starcraft 2 title. It's a brand new tank named Thor and it will make the famous Mammoth Tank seem like a
bicycle.
You'll see it in action on the game's official site and this has got to be the largest ground unit ever seen in a RTS title. The new tank is part of the Thor Project, developed by the
Terrans and their newest tool of destruction will be equipped with "Thor's Hammer" Particle Accelerators and a 250mm Bombardment Cannon. This Thor unit will play the role of the Ultimate Heavy-assault Mech and I can already imagine it taking over the Siege Tank's legacy.
From the animations available on
Starcraft2.com I could realize that the Thor is a pretty heavy unit, that packs a lot of firepower. You'll probably be able to upgrade its speed, but I think you'll need to send this mech over to the enemy's camp accompanied by some speedy ground units and air support to start a full scale rampage. Also, the new unit's ranged attacks seem to be its primary advantage, because such a huge tank is useless for close combat, so you'll surely place a couple of Banshees and Ghosts nearby, for protection.
Here's the official description of the new unit taken from
Starcraft2.com : "Most disturbing of all was the demonstration that this monster could be built from the ground up by ordinary construction vehicles in an astonishingly short time frame. The Umojan team reported back to Protectorate, thoroughly shaken by their findings and praying that some counter could be found for such a beast". I'm a huge Terran fan, so the Zergs will have to fear me once again, as I'll rush to build the Thor and smithe them all.
