Video game developer Blizzard is announcing that it will be launching a new campaign for Starcraft 2, called Whispers of Oblivion, which is designed to offer the narrative required to link the final two chapters in the single-player campaign.

All those interested in the real-strategy title can get the new three missions for free, regardless of whether they picked up any of the installments of the sequel or not.

Initially, the Whispers of Oblivion content will be delivered as a beta for those who pre-ordered Legacy of the Void in July, and a full launch will take place soon after.

The trailer sports the classic high production values of Blizzard, but the story laid out and the hints about the future will probably be impossible to understand for someone who does not yet have some info about Starcraft 2 and the galaxy-spawning experience it delivers.

Legacy of the Void is supposed to be launched later in the year only on the PC.

Gamers will be able to take control of the Protoss as they attempt to work with other races in the galaxy in order to eliminate a threat that might exterminate all life.

Blizzard has said that a smaller gamer-controlled force will have to deal with waves of enemies and that the human and Zerg factions will also have a role to play.

Whispers of Oblivion for Starcraft 2 might attract a wider audience

The fact that three missions for the strategy title are offered for free to anyone interested in playing them means that there's a chance the studio will reach more players.

A lot depends on the kind of objectives and core gameplay mechanics that Blizzard introduces in the free content.

Both Heart of the Swarm and Wings of Liberty had some very cool moments, created when the studio chose to drop the classic elements of the genre in order to try and innovate.

Legacy of the Void does not yet have a launch date, but the game will only be offered on the PC.

Blizzard has not yet detailed all the tweaks it plans on making to the Starcraft 2 multiplayer mechanics and the units that will be added.
