Blizzard Entertainment has released a new video outlining the upcoming changes to the Zerg race, to be introduced in the Legacy of the Void expansion.

The real-time strategy game is getting a ton of new and exciting additions, and Zerg fans will surely be pleased by what Blizzard has in store for them.

Legacy of the Void will bring Zerg players some powerful new units, the first of which being the Ravager, morphed from the old Roach. The new ranged unit comes with an ability that deals damage to a target area, called Corrosive Bile.

The artillery ability marks the target location, and after a short delay, the projectile deals high damage to both units and structures in the target area, including aerial ones. In addition to the damage, the ability will also enable Zerg players to destroy force fields, a bane of PvZ matches.

The ability to effectively deal with force fields will surely translate into more exciting micro battles between the two races, and will prompt Protoss players to be more careful with force field use.

Veterans who have been around since the first installment in Blizzard’s real-time strategy series will no doubt recognize the Lurker, making a return in Legacy of the Void. Lurkers can burrow, becoming invisible, and dealing massive splash damage on the ground, just like in the original Starcraft: Brood War.

They can also be employed as an effective siege unit against stationary base defenses, due to their great range. However, the unit’s own lack of mobility, coupled with the fact that it has to first burrow in order to attack, makes it difficult to use to its full effect.

Changes to Zerg’s current units

The Corruptor is getting a brand new ability, called Caustic Spray, allowing it to deal damage to ground units and structures. The damage ramps up over time, making it an ideal tool to quickly take down buildings.

The Infestor’s new ability, Aggressive Mutation, grants a flat damage buff to friendly units in its area of effect, making hordes of zerglings even deadlier than before.

The Swarm Host has been reworked, and in Legacy of the Void, it will be undertaking a more aggressive role. The Swarm Host’s Locusts are stronger, but they spawn much less frequently than before. They can also be deployed while on the move, and they can be upgraded to fly, in the late game.

The final change to the Zerg race is coming to the Nydus Worm. The Worm will no longer receive damage while emerging from the ground, making it a much more reliable option for harassment as well as defense against drops.

Thanks to this change, in the late game, players will be able to employ multiple Nydus Worms to force their way through heavily defended locations, expanding Zerg’s strategic arsenal.
