Dustin Browder, the director of Starcraft 2, says that his entire team was surprised to see the level of success that the real-time strategy game achieved in the eSports world on the United States market.

Initially, the team counted on its South Korean audience to drive the multiplayer side of the game and also had strong signs that it would appeal to European players.

Browder tells Games.on.net that he never expected it to have the same impact in the United States.

He says that the expectations at Blizzard were that, “maybe we can get just get a couple of games, get a couple of guys up there and maybe a couple of thousand dollars up there and it’ll be awesome. And then we started seeing MLG happen over and over again.”

Both Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty and the more recent Heart of the Swarm are huge commercial successes for Blizzard and will dominate eSports events for years.
