Coming to extend the number of displays that can be connected to PCs or Macs, as well as the variety of supported monitors, is Startech, whose latest product is a fairly unique adapter.

Displays and computers may feature multiple connectivity solutions by default nowadays, but there are still enough situations where one lacks what the other requires.

There are also certain plugs and ports that simply work better than others or are more widely accepted.

In order to bridge the connection between the two in such situations, IT companies have invented adapters, otherwise known as converters.

Startech has now added its name to that list, though its product is fairly unusual, if not unique, given what interface it transforms into HDMI.

Basically, the newcomer converts USB signals into HDMI and, thus, allows multi-monitor configuration on even Mac-based laptops and Windows-loaded mobile PCs that have USB 2.0 ports.

The converter supports Full HD image quality (1,920 x 1,080 pixels display resolution) and the Windows Aero interface in Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Additionally, 2-channel stereo audio can be transmitted through the adapter, the power from the USB connection being enough for everything.

“We discovered that people were looking for an easier way to output video and audio from their non-HDMI enabled computers to an HDMI display” said John Mardinly, Senior Product Manager for StarTech.com.

“As is the case with many of our other USB adapters we offer, this adapter allows older computers to be used with today’s cutting-edge technology.”

Already with its own product page, the Startech USB to HDMI (USB2HDMI) adapter features a price of £83.99 GBP (exc. VAT).

Finally, the technology used in the making is scalable and can be used in business and home applications alike, whether as multi-monitor solution or affordable way to link a system to a HDTV.
