StarCraft II Multiplayer: A Newcomer's Perspective (Part I)

To put it simply, I am awfully bad at StarCraft. While I was quite capable of finishing the story campaigns for StarCraft and StarCraft: Brood War, I never won a multiplayer match, not even barely. I played around five matches that I brutally lost in ten minutes and vowed never to return to this mode of the game again.

Even when I heard that StarCraft II was in development, I got excited only for the single player and planned to ignore the multiplayer all together. I never even tried to get
in the beta. That was until I recently heard Chris Sigaty, lead producer of the game, saying that StarCraft II had been designed so that everyone can have a chance to win. Of course, I doubted Mr. Sigaty and promised myself to try an online match when the title would launch.

In advance, I must say that StarCraft II does everything it can to ease you into the experience, thoroughly explaining some mechanics in the challenge modes and constructing an achievement system meant to guide the players to become perpared. After playing through he first three challenge scenarios I tried my luck in a practice league game, choosing my favorite race from the StarCraft universe, the Protoss.

And I won. For the first time in my life I beat someone at StarCraft. My biggest achievement ever in a multiplayer real time strategy game happened in my first match of StarCraft II. Using the coolest unit in the history of gaming, the Mothership, I teleported my troops in the enemy base and ripped it apart with my Zealots and the spectacular Colossi. The feeling was so exciting that I finally understood why so many people have played this game for so long. Imediatly afterward, I started another match to see if it wasn't only beginner's luck, but I won that one too.

I will keep on playing in the following weeks and keep our readers updated about my adventures as the proverbial “noob” in StarCraft II's incredible multiplayer component. Congratulations Mr. Sigaty, you were right! If I can win a StarCraft II online match, than anyone will be able to do the same. Blizzard has perfected matchmaking.
