BioWare is quite confident in the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG and revealed that it hopes to populate its virtual world with a huge number of planets, even setting a goal of 500 worlds by 2025.

The Old Republic has been a long time in the making, with BioWare hyping it up on every occasion, and with fans clinging to every statement made by the developer.

Now, just as the pre-orders for Star Wars: The Old Republic have started being accepted, with three versions of the game up for sale, BioWare has posted a few details about the many planets found in the game, and how it hopes to release more of them after the launch of the game, through planned updates.

"I can say that we have 19 major worlds," said The Old Republic's game director and lead designer James Ohlen, according to Darth Hater. "Then we have an indeterminate number of minor worlds. And our goal, obviously this being an online game that we're hoping is going to last for decades, we're going to be, obviously, adding more to the galaxy map as the game progresses."

Ohlen even went so far as to set a goal of having over 500 planets in Star Wars: The Old Republic until 2025, saying that, "We want to add dozens of worlds, hundreds of worlds eventually. In 2025, we'll hopefully have 500 worlds."

As you can imagine, these are some pretty big words, even for the large online game that will no doubt be The Old Republic. It all depends on BioWare, however, as the studio needs to put the finishing touches on the game and get it released, at least in North America and Europe, as soon as possible and then worry about making new content.

Sadly, a concrete launch date still isn't known, with Electronic Arts, the game's publisher, keeping things under a tight lid for now, even if rumors are now hinting at a November release for the online title.
