Right after BioWare and Electronic Arts officially confirmed a release date for Star Wars: The Old Republic, of December 20 in North America and December 22 in Europe, Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz predicts that the online game might reach sales of around 3 million units in its first year.

After the details about the subscription plan were also revealed, with buyers getting a 30-day subscription with their copy, and paying $14.99/£8.99/€12.99 per month, $41.97/£25.17/€35.97 for three months, or $77.94/£46.14/€65.94 for six months, analysts have started speculating on what sales figures will the online game reach.

Cowen & Company's Doug Creutz believes that 3 million units of The Old Republic will be sold in its first year, while the number of subscribers will be around the 2 million average during 2012. He also notes that after the release date announcement, pre-orders have increased exponentially.

Star Wars Online will be a hugely successful game. I believe they will meet or exceed the subscription numbers of the current top MMO within a few years of launch. Star Wars has the unique ability to combine fantasy elements such as swordplay and "magic" with elements such as advanced weapons and space travel, which will appeal to a wide audience that will go beyond the traditional Star Wars fan. Combine that with near universal awareness of the Star Wars universe, and I think you have a real winner.
