Video game publisher Electronic Arts says that the BioWare-made MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic has performed well since it adopted a free-to-play business model, with an increase in both the overall number of players and the revenue they have generated.

Frank Gibeau, the leader of the Labels division at EA, tells investors that, “Since it was induced in November, we've added more than 1.7 million new players on the free model to the service.”

He adds, “And the number of subscriptions has stabilized at just under half a million.”

Electronic Arts says that developer BioWare is working on new content for Star Wars: The Old Republic in order to keep players interested, with releases set to take place every six weeks.

The Old Republic might soon be accompanied by other Star Wars titles from Electronic Arts, linked to the new licensing deal it has with Disney.
