Hollywood's love affair with the gaming industry has been going on for quite some time now. Ever since the early days of the Atari or the Nintendo Entertainment System, hot movie properties have been ported and adapted so that movie-goers can spend some more money on those licensed video games.
The bigger the impact on pop culture the franchise has, the more quickly it needs to be turned into a video game. This is especially true with the Star Wars franchise, which has seen a lot of video games based on its rich universe. The most recent video game based on the popular franchise has been Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which has become the fastest selling Star Wars game in history.
The title was internally developed by LucasArts for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while Krome Studios worked on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and Wii versions and n-Space contributed to the DS version of it. It was released in North America on September 16, 2008, and reached Australia and Asia on September 17, while Europeans got their hands on it on September 19, the same year.
The title will also receive soon enough a special version called the Ultimate Sith Edition, which will bring the great game onto the PC and the Mac OS platforms. It is currently scheduled to appear this fall and will certainly make it a must-buy for PC and Mac gamers.
“The development teams here at LucasArts, at Krome Studios, and at n-Space, Inc., have put a tremendous amount of effort into creating this all-new Star Wars story and innovative technology,” LucasArts' President Darrell Rodriguez said. “I am extremely proud of what Executive Producer Haden Blackman and his team have been able to accomplish in The Force Unleashed, and can't wait to hear what fans think of it when they've played through the game.”
The title takes place right in the canon of the Star Wars franchise, as you will play as the secret apprentice of Darth Vader, Starkiller, who will grow under your guidance and start using his dark skills on the enemies. Reviews have been mixed, but generally positive, as the complex story, robust physics and impressive soundtrack made up for the sometimes frustrating gameplay.
