Not much of a surprise, though

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, the latest installment in the Star Wars franchise, was launched a week ago. Although there were some who didn't think too kindly of the new game created by LucasArts, most of us were pretty excited by the launch. Of course, when I say most of us, I’m actually referring to the almost 1.5 million people who have purchased it, making it the best selling game based in the Star Wars universe.

“The record-setting sales of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed shows the undiminished power of Star Wars and its popularity across all media types, including video games. We’re blown away by the response to the game.” says Darrell Rodriguez, president of LucasArts.

Undoubtedly, the game was bound for some sort of sales record, if only based on the millions of fans which would buy anything branded with Star Wars on it. Additionally, Lucas Arts also stated that the initial batch of 4.3 million copies of the game would sell ahead of schedule, and that it was already manufacturing more copies in anticipation of the holiday season, which is sure to turn out very lucrative for the company.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed brings a new twist in gameplay story and design, shifting the focus from the regular heroes like Luke or Anakin Skywalker, who stood on the good side of the Force. The game puts the player in the role of an apprentice of Darth Vader, the quintessential representative of the dark side of the Force.

Given that a view on the Star Wars universe from this side is quite hard to imagine, this is probably one of the reasons why the game sold so well, as people had probably become bored of always playing only with the good side. On their journey as an apprentice of Darth Vader, the player learns all the evil ways of the Force, while also exploring all the parts of the Star Wars Universe.
