“Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens” will be out in theaters this December, but this month’s issue of Vanity Fair magazine is like Christmas come early. Not only do 4 of the leading characters in the film have landed the cover, but the inside editorial is the result of an on-set visit by Annie Leibovitz.

The cover is above. It shows Harrison Ford’s Han Solo and Peter Meyhew’s Chewbacca next to new stars John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, in what is meant to be a very promising mixture of old and new, tradition and innovation.

With a fanbase as huge as that of this film franchise, being mindful of the tradition is of the utmost importance.

However, perhaps more revealing is the video below, the on-set footage edited together. It’s meant as a sort of promo for the full pictorial, and it includes 2 good looks at characters not shown before, those played by Adam Driver and Lupita Nyong’o.

It’s a blink and you missed it-type of appearance, but it’s better than nothing.

Driver is shown in a black leather coat, looking tall and menacing, while Lupita is shown in CGI tracking dots, which means she won’t actually appear in the film save as an animated character.

“The Force Awakens” is directed by J.J. Abrams.
