Sony Online Entertainment has announced that it plans to launch a new expansion for their MMO Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures on December 15, the same day that the older Star Wars galaxies is set to shut down.

The expansion, called Battle of Umbara, will add a whole new combat zone to explore and will also get access to all new Zone Events, which allows the players to band together and take part in an ongoing battle against invaders.

There are also new mounts, including an At-RT, a Speeder Bike and a Tauntaun, and collections, quests that allow players to get access to items in a set for unique gear linked to the area they are exploring.

Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures is also set to receive new combat abilities, which can take out enemy droids, using either the normal weapon attack or the force attack, and a number of destructible objects.

The Battle of Umbara expansion will also give out rewards to all those players who are able to complete all the new content introduced, consisting of titles, Trophies and furniture for their in-game homes.

Sony is probably releasing Battle of Umbara as a way of keeping players interested in Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventure in the lead up to the launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic, the new MMO that is developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts on December 20.

The two games have pretty different audiences, with Clone Wars aimed primarily at younger gamers who are also fans of the television show of the same name while The Old Republic aims mostly at older gamers who liked the Knights of the Old Republic series.

Star Wars: The Old Republic has a heavy emphasis on storytelling and will otherwise follow the well-known template of subscription based MMOs.
