Though many fans didn’t actually see it that way, “Star Trek” is considered by critics one of the best movies released in 2009. Given the hype before and after the release in theaters, it’s understandable why talk of a sequel to the reboot would go back to almost a year before the actual release date. Expect said follow-up to arrive in theaters in June 2012, MTV says.

Word of this broke in the blogosphere the other day and, oddly enough, Paramount Pictures did not tardy in coming out with a confirmation: “Star Trek 2,” presumably bringing together the same cast as in the first film, is scheduled for theatrical release on June 29, 2012. Director J.J. Abrams might also be returning at the helm, which is actually what fans and critics are hoping for, given that he is the one who introduced the rebooted franchise to a new segment of the audience.

“We all know there’s a ‘Star Trek’ sequel coming. Hell, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, writers / producers of the May reboot, were talking about sequel possibilities as far back as the week after the first movie came out. Now we have a date to pin our hopes to: June 29, 2012. […] Maybe director J.J. Abrams will return to helm the sequel, maybe he won’t. Maybe Khan will be the villain, maybe not,” MTV states.

“Paramount has confirmed to MTV that the projected release date for the ‘Star Trek’ sequel is indeed June 29, 2012,” the media outlet says in an update to the aforementioned post. “Regardless, there really hasn’t ever been any doubt that we’d be seeing more ‘Star Trek.’ Abrams’ take on the series made it friendly to an entirely new, much wider audience than its ever known before,” MTV goes on to say, stating the obvious.

Going somehow to speak for the immense success of “Star Trek,” though this may be a kind of “distinction” no movie would actually want, TorrentFrek revealed just recently that the new “Star Trek” was last year’s most pirated movie, with 10,960,000 illegal downloads.
