The developer of the MMO Star Trek Online has announced that all those interested in the game can now enjoy the game using a free-to-play and microtransaction model.

The elements that are under limited availability for the free-to-play accounts include Guild creation, character and officer slots and inventory.

There are also limitations placed on re-spec possibilities and access to the Foundry content creation editor.

Previously Star Trek Online was available under the free-to-play model for those who had already subscribed to the game.

When it was launched the MMO was seen as capable of challenging the supremacy of World of Warcraft, the Blizzard made leader of the subscription market, because of the strong license that it used and the solid mechanics that Cryptic was known for.

Unfortunately the launch window was plagued by issued like bugs and by the fact that high level gamers had little content to work with.

Since then Cryptic has solved most issues and it seems that the game is flourishing under the free-to-play model.
