Director Roberto Orci has finally offered some details about his next big project, which also happens to be the third installment in a rebooted series part of a much bigger and iconic franchise, “Star Trek.”

With the third film scheduled for release in 2016, Orci is taking over from director J.J. Abrams, who exited the franchise to handle writing and directorial duties on “Star Wars Episode VII.”

This will be Orci’s directorial debut, but he’s not scared. If anything, he’s eager to take over from Abrams, as he revealed in a podcast for Geoff Boucher’s Humans From Earth, because at last, he gets to take the characters back to their original.

“In this movie, they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space,” Orci says.

Fans took issue with the fact that the USS Enterprise was not shown doing just that in the two films that came out with Abrams at the helm, with many even accusing him of destroying everything that “Star Trek” stood for.

Orci argues that, with this reboot too as with everything else in life, all we need is a little patience because, once the ball gets rolling, fans will get what they’ve been waiting for.

“In [‘Into Darkness’] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2009 [‘Star Trek’] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie,” Orci says.
