The launch, although belated, is exciting nonetheless and marks another step forward

Star Citizen's Arena Commander module is releasing today, allowing everyone who pledged for Star Citizen to finally enjoy killing people in the vast nothingness of space, which is not that nothingness-y after all.

Chris Roberts' Cloud Imperium Games, developer of the upcoming space opera sim Star Citizen, has just announced that the bugs that prevented the release of the dogfighting module on schedule, on May 29, have been cleared and that the update will be making its way into the backers' hands today.

In addition to the exciting announcement, Cloud Imperium Games has also published a gorgeously atmospheric launch trailer that shows the game in action, as well as two massive in-game screenshots, which you can find below.

The full release of the game is still somewhere in the distant future, but getting a taste of the space combat that the Wing Commander series (helmed by Chris Roberts) made so attractive, in spite of the fact that you are basically roaming through space in a tiny explosive deathtrap, is good enough in the interim.

Nevertheless, lots of hangers are rumored to remain deserted tonight, as space gets littered with more flying debris, the staple of our civilization. And for good reason, too, as the video looks massively enticing.

"A weekend of hard testing revealed several blockers in the current Release Candidate. The team has worked to resolve these today, and believe we have a good build now," Chris Roberts revealed yesterday, exponentially increasing the tension.

"The go/no-go meeting has happened and the word is GO! Arena Commander V0.8 is currently being uploaded to our server partners. If all goes according to plan, the module should be available to play later tonight! There's no need to keep reloading your Star Citizen Launcher: we will post here as soon as the download is available," Roberts posted later on.

"ALERT: We are aware of a widespread issue in which the game locks between the Hangar and Arena Commander. We are working the issue and will publish a patch as quickly as possible," the update on the Arena Commander release announcement says, showing that everything is not going according to plan. The team has stated that it's working on a solution, so everything should eventually be fine.

Arena Commander, or Star Citizen V0.8, is just the beginning of a push toward V1.0, when the game should be feature complete, with all the maps and game modes that Cloud Imperium Games promised their fans at PAX in April.

The developers have also put together a helpful Arena Commander manual, meant to teach newcomers how to play the game and get further immersed in the universe of Star Citizen.
