Chris Roberts, the creator of Wing Commander and the current leader of development on Star Citizen, has revealed that he is using crowdfunding in order to make sure that the has full freedom when creating his video game.

Speaking to Gamasutra, the developer stated that, “In the old days, this is the presentation I would’ve given to John Riccitiello and Frank Gibeau at a greenlight meeting. Ultimately, the same sort of device, but it’s for a different audience. I’m pitching to the people who ultimately count – the people who are going to buy the game.”

Star Citizen is a space-based combat game with role-playing elements, something that no modern publisher would probably directly fund, so it makes sense for Roberts to try and get the resources he needs from his target audience.

A playable form of Star Citizen will be offered to those who back the project during 2013 and a commercial version of the game will arrive one year later.
