Cloud Imperium Games has reached a new crowdfunding milestone for their work-in-progress space exploration game Star Citizen, the most successful publicly-funded game in history.

Star Citizen still seems to have a strong momentum, as the game has so far managed to raise over $39 / €28 million from its more than 394k backers, securing the addition of a new user-elected star system to the game, after going past the $35 / €25 million mark in December and passing the $37 / €26 million one in January.

Project leader Chris Roberts, creator of the classic Wing Commander series while working at Origin, has announced that if funding reaches $40 / €29 million, a team will be assembled to work exclusively on adding procedurally generated content to the game.

"Procedural Generation R&D Team – This stretch goal will allocate funding for Cloud Imperium to develop procedural generation technology for future iterations of Star Citizen. Advanced procedural generation will be necessary for creating entire planets worth of exploration and development content.

"A special strike team of procedural generation-oriented developers will be assembled to make this technology a reality," Roberts stated.

The game supporters’ most sought-after feature for the backer alpha is the dogfighting module, the addition of which has been postponed from the initial announced date of December.

"Star Citizen isn't just about the game we launch with. We're going into this building not only an immersive launch experience, but the platforms and the tools to let us keep expanding the game to meet the available technology. The game won't be a static experience: we want to build Star Citizen in a way that the experience will be fresh in five years, ten years and into the foreseeable future," he concluded.

Star Citizen is currently scheduled for release sometime during 2015.
