Sony and its Naughty Dog studio confirm that they're going to debut the Left Behind expansion for The Last of Us as a standalone experience on May 12 for the PS4 and PS3 platforms, after already launching it for owners of the game back in early 2014.

The Last of Us launched back in the summer of 2013 for the PS3 platform and got released onto the PS4 in the summer of 2014, in the form of The Last of Us Remastered, which boasted better visuals, enhanced mechanics, and all previous DLC built right into the title.

The Left Behind DLC is coming as a standalone experience this month

Now, in order to give PS3 and PS4 owners who've yet to experience The Last of Us a new chance to enter the game, Sony confirms on its PS blog that the Left Behind expansion is going to appear as a standalone title.

On May 12, the PS3 and PS4 versions of Left Behind will appear on the PS Store, allowing console owners to go through the short story-based experience in exchange for 10 USD/EUR. Besides the story in the add-on, those who get it will also receive a two-hour trial of the Factions multiplayer mode.

You can upgrade to the full game or the multiplayer

If you finish it and want to get the full experience, you can easily upgrade to the full Factions online mode for 10 USD/EUR. You can also upgrade to the full digital game, which comes with the whole story and multiplayer, for 35 USD/EUR on the PS4 or 25 USD/EUR on the PS3.

The special expansion focuses on Ellie's past, and while it spoils a few sequences from the regular single-player campaign, it takes place mostly in the past acting as a prologue and exploring Ellie's relationship with Riley.

"If you haven’t had a chance yet to check out The Last of Us, this is a nicely priced gateway to checking out the world and characters so many people (and critics) loved. While part of the story of Left Behind takes place during the main narrative arc of The Last of Us, I think some of the best and most touching moments of any game in recent memory occur during the prequel segments," Naughty Dog's Arne Meyer explains.

Right now, the studio is focusing on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End that's coming for the PS4 in 2016, although a sequel for The Last of Us has been rumored for some time.
