The setting of the World War II has been used to death (literally) in games. We have strategies dealing with everything from the overreaching strategic elements to the
tactical engagements of war, and we have first person and squad based shooters, like the
Call of Duty and Medal of Honor series, dealing with the same war. We even have specialized wargames dealing with specific theaters
of the war.
But now Dreamlore Games is trying to breathe new (and alien) life into the World War II games genre with their announcement regarding the groundbreaking Stalin vs. Martians real time strategy. The game will not be your typical wargame or real time strategy. It will feature the glorious Red Army and the equally glorious and Nintendo-like Martian invaders, and will see the player progress as he kicks alien butt out of Siberia. The game will be fast and extremely fun, without any trace of realism or seriousness thrown in to ruin the experience.
The game will not feature any base building or any lengthy unit descriptions. As aliens die, they leave coins on the battlefield, which can be collected by units for Mother Russia. With these coins, existing units can be upgraded, off-map reinforcements can be called in to kill even more aliens or special abilities (which are kept under wraps for the moment but are promised to be spectacular) can be bought and used. I hope freeze bombs and hungry wolf packs make it in the superpowers section.
The visuals will aim more for fun and interesting than for realism. Stalin himself will make an appearance late in the game as head of the biggest unit on the battlefield and will lead the final assault against the cartoon looking yet deadly alien scum.
The game is set for a PC release in early fall of 2008 so look out for more news on Stalin vs. Martians. And look out for aliens.
