Just plug it into the audio jack of your phone and voila! Instant pay

You'd think the audio jack of a phone, or anything else, would be used for, well, an audio product like a speaker or headset. It turns out that's not always the case though.

Square has come up with a way to use the audio port for reading credit cards.

More specifically, it has made a credit card reader that plugs into the port and lets you make transactions by reading the magnetic strip.

Square has just introduced a small and square reader of this sort, which is an improvement of a previous design, with 45% thinner frame.

It's about as thin as a smartphone or iPhone 5S if you want to compare it to something.

Sales should start soon, if they haven't already. In any case, by the time 2014 rolls around, the Square credit card reader will be available worldwide, in about 30,000 retail stores. Not sure about the price though.
