About a month ago, Square Enix have announced that they are working on Project Flare, a new architecture for cloud gaming, designed to improve performance in top-end titles by a great margin.

The new technology will be based on virtual supercomputers and may very well replace consoles in the future, but for now it has only been showcased in a couple of videos, such as the one above, featuring a high-definition flying scene with real-time camera movement on a tablet.

Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda has recently stated in an interview for Japanese magazine Famitsu that he has a lot of confidence in the concept of cloud gaming.

“If you think about the long term, the trend of cloud gaming may be inevitable, and it could become the mainstream. Like with smartphones you can enjoy games unique to smartphones, I think cloud games will also offer experiences unique to the cloud. Moreover cloud gaming will also result in a big change in the business,” Matsuda was quoted by DS.

Project Flare promises a lot of potential, but it will still be a while until anything palpable reaches the markets, as it is currently scheduled to launch two to three years from now.
