Video game developer Square Enix praises services like Kickstarter, Steam Greenlight, and Early Access and says that it is aiming to bring some of their qualities to its own development process.

Yosuke Matsuda, the executive managing director of the company, is quoted by VG247 as telling investors in a meeting that “I would like to realize with respect to long‐term, large‐scale developments. It is not an easy task, but I believe that it has become quite possible under the current environment.”

Kickstarter allows teams to raise money from their fan base and has been successfully used by companies ranging from Obsidian to Double Fine.

Steam Greenlight and Early Access also allow smaller teams to quickly bring their projects to the public, allowing them to test features and promote them.

Square Enix is currently working on a new Final Fantasy project that is linked to next-gen consoles.
