Video game developer and publisher Square Enix has announced that it plans to merge no less than 18 servers for its Final Fantasy XIV MMO during March of this year, making the number of surviving servers just ten.

Gamers who are still engaged with the game will be able to transfer their characters to a new game world between March 1 and 19 and those do not choose to will get moved to a random surviving server.

The actual merger will take place on March 27.

Square Enix says that the move is designed to improve the player experience by making sure that all game servers have enough population to keep the troubled MMO going.

Square Enix is now working on the 2.0 version of Final Fantasy XIV, which is expected to arrive before the end of the year, with new classes, reworked mechanics and new content to explore.

The latest Final Fantasy MMO has been launched in late 2010 and has never managed to attract a solid audience.
