The Members community portal for Square Enix gamers in both Japan and in the United States has been breached by unknown attackers and the video game publisher has decided to take it offline in order to evaluate the extent of the problem.

A statement from the publisher on the official website stated, “We have reason to believe that unknown parties may have gained unauthorized access to a particular Square Enix server related to the free Square Enix Members service offered in North America and Japan.”

It adds that the service has been suspended as soon as the breach has been detected and that it is trying to make sure the system is now secure.

Square Enix adds, “While some personal information may have been accessed, we can confirm that there is no possibility of any credit card information leak from this incident, since the server in question stores no credit card information.”

The publisher does not know exactly how long the Members portal will be offline but says that, when it is back online, the security measures will be improved and all those who use it will get an update on the situation.

Square Enix also apologizes to players for all the inconveniences caused and says that it takes all security related issues very seriously.

The Members website is not needed for multiplayer and other in-game features and only allows fans of video games from the Japanese publisher to get access to some prizes and exclusive items.

Sony was affected by a huge attack in April of this year, with still unknown cybernetic attackers making off with a huge number of personal account information, including credit card data, and leading to a month-long outage of service on the PlayStation Network.

Other video game related websites have also suffered security breaches since then.
