The company aims to use its Collective platform to garner feedback and then create the games through crowdfunding

Square Enix is apparently looking for developers to make pitches for three of its popular existing IPs, Gex, Fear Effect, and Anachronox.

The company has announced that the properties are available for licensing, and approved developers will be able to make video games based on their universes, either as sequels or as entirely new games.

Square Enix has revealed that it isn't looking to fund any studios willing to do the work, but instead that developers would be expected to finance their own work, through crowdfunding.

The publisher explains that anything that is pre-approved internally is going to be published on the feedback platform, and if the response from the community is positive, the project will move on to crowdfunding.

The developer will hold the full responsibility for creating the game and will be the key beneficiary of the success, with Square Enix only stepping in for distribution, for a cut of the revenue. The publisher reveals that, in addition to getting a 5 percent cut of any funds raised, it would also get 10 percent of sales revenue for publishing and distribution, and an additional 10 percent for licensing the IPs.

More fuel for nostalgia

There hasn't been an entry in either of the three series in quite a few years, which means that the fondly remembered franchises hold a genuine nostalgic value for their fans.

Unfortunately, that also means that a lot of gamers are completely unfamiliar with the three intellectual properties.

Gex is a platformer series that stars a wisecracking gecko, going on all sorts of crazy adventures. Fear Effect is a horror shooter with demons, and Anachronox is probably the most exciting of the three, a cyberpunk role-playing game.

The third-person RPG has loads of characters, a distinct film noir flavoring, and many gamers regard it as a great underdog that never received the acclaim it deserved.

If you're interested to learn more about the process, you can head up to the official announcement on Square Enix's Collective website.
