Gamers will be able to return to them over long periods of time

Video game publisher Square Enix announces that it aims to create more persistent online worlds in the near future and that the recently launched Tomb Raider has managed to sell about 4 million units.

Darrell Gallagher, the new leader of the North American and European division of the company, states via Gamasutra that “We see the opportunity for some of our games continuing beyond a traditional beginning, middle, and end. We can have them become extendable and more persistent – with an opportunity to build and grow across games.”

Square Enix wants to keep players engaged for longer periods of time, but the executive says that the core mechanics will not be those of a traditional MMO.

The new Tomb Raider is the fastest selling title in the history of the franchise, but it’s unclear whether it has recuperated the invested resources and whether a sequel is in development.
