The leader of publisher Square Enix, Yoichi Wada, has said that Final Fantasy Versus 13, the much-awaited companion to the main Final Fantasy XIII release, is still in development at the company.

As such, he invited all the fans that have been asking for information to have a little more patience with the development team.

The president and chief executive officer stated, “I cannot say any more than, ‘We are making Versus!’ Please wait a little longer.”

Another clue that Final Fantasy Versus 13 is still in development was found in the Final Fantasy 25-year anniversary booklet distributed to those who attended the event in Japan, which has a piece of art featuring Noctis, the presumed lead of the new game.

Interestingly, during the actual event the various Square Enix developers only referred to the game as Versus, which might point to a name change and even a new direction for the game.

Final Fantasy Versus 13 was first shown a long time ago, during E3 2006, alongside Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0, as part of the new Fabula Nova Crystallis game universe.

Since then, the company has launched two core titles in the Japanese role-playing game genre linked to it and has announced another in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, which is being prepared for a 2013 launch.

The changes that the universe has seen probably mean that Versus 13 is being reconfigured to be better integrate into the overall narrative.

Final Fantasy Versus 13 was set to be more action focused than its companion titles, with a game world based on current reality and a cast of characters that are able to deliver emotional content rather than simply conforming to the archetypes of the genre.

An official announcement might be made before the end of 2012.
