Spyro: Shadow Legacy is a video game created by Amaze Entertainment and published by Vivendi Universal together with Sierra Entertainment, only for the Nintendo DS handheld platform, on October 18, 2005, in North America, and November 4, that same year, in Europe, as a new installment in the long-running Spyro franchise, the fifth to appear on a portable device and the tenth overall in the classic series.
Spyro: Shadow Legacy sees its story take place after the adventures in Spyro: A Hero's Tail, and blends together action and role-playing game elements in its gameplay, so that players earn experience points while fighting enemies, which can then be used to level up the small dragon and unlock for him brand new skills, spells or powers, in order to make fighting the increasingly difficult opponents that much easier.
Spyro: Shadow Legacy is the last game in the original series of Spyro titles, as after its release, the development studio rebooted the whole franchise, starting from scratch, but keeping Spyro and some of the gameplay mechanics seen in the first games, including Shadow Legacy for the DS handheld platform.
The franchise is now owned by Activision, which wants to take it into new directions while keeping the casual nature of the games, and bring it to more platforms, from consoles, to handhelds or smartphones.
