Sputnik, the first ever artificial satellite sent on Earth's low orbit, has just been ported on the mobiles by the European game developer Nordcurrent. The launch of the spacecraft, which took place 54 years ago, has marked the beginning of the Space Age.

In this regard, game developer and publisher Nordcurrent is trying to impress players with an addictive arcade-style game named after the famous Sputnik program.

“We wanted to create something really addictive, an endless game. We spent months tweaking the controls and trying to get everything right, that’s how Sputnik was born,” said Victoria Trofimova, Director at Nordcurrent. “We hope players will enjoy it!”

The gameplay is very simple, as players must guide Sputnik, the first spacecraft ever created, among asteroids and UFOs by tilting their mobile devices.

The goal of the game is to reach as far as possible into outer space, past Mars, Saturn and possibly all the way out of the Milky Way.

During their travels, players will have to overcome specific obstacles such as gravitational fields, black holes, distorted space-time continuum, as well as other weird places in the galaxy.

However, no matter how many obstacles they meet or how far they manage to go, the controls will remain the same: tilt left or right.

Sputnik is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices running iOS 3.0 or later. The game is now available for download worldwide from the App Store for $0.99 in the U.S. and €0.79 in Europe.

Nordcurrent is also known for publishing popular games such as: Jewel Keepers: Easter Island, Robin Hood - the Return of Richard and Urbanix.

The company has also published one of the largest games collection for iPhone and iPod touch, “101-in-1.” The collection includes puzzle, arcade, action, racing, sports, cooking, shooting and sudoku games.
