Video games can tackle a wide range of genres, from shooters, in either first- or third-person view, to intricate, role-playing or racing titles. But, sometimes, in an effort to find innovation and to “break” the market, some developers try more unorthodox approaches.

Such is the case with Guillemot Inc., which is responsible for the dating simulator Sprung. The title, which was published by Ubisoft, appeared on December 8, 2004 in North America and reached European shores on March 11, the next year.

The purpose of the game is to meet up, flirt and eventually hook up with other people, depending on one's genre. The location is at a remote winter resort called Snowbird Mountain, where players can interact with other characters and complete all of the 50 dating missions included in the main story. From interacting with drama queens and kings to more normal characters, Sprung promises a great story, penned by Colleen McGuinnes from the famous TV series North Shore.

“We're thrilled to bring three genre-leading titles to the Nintendo DS that each reach a very different, yet broad, audience,” Tony Kee, vice president of marketing, Ubisoft, said about Sprung and a few other titles for the platform. “The Nintendo DS is an innovative and unique portable videogame system. We're excited to match that level of creativity and provide an all-new experience with our titles, especially Sprung.”

Sadly, the game hasn't really simulated dating very well, as it has been negatively received by critics and reviewers, who say that it feels very boring at times and that some of the characters are too shallow or too far-reached in order to be appealing.
