HTC Touch Pro to receive WM 6.5 upgrade from Sprint

According to the latest news on the Web, wireless carrier Sprint is working on providing its HTC Touch Pro users with an upgrade to the latest Windows Mobile operating system, WinMo 6.5, at least this is what a Sprint customer support email published on pocketnow suggests. There are no exact details on whether the device is indeed the Touch Pro or the Touch Pro 2, but, in case it is the former, then this represents rather great news for a lot of users out there.

Here is what the email states:

Dear Brett,
Thank you for contacting Sprint. I understand your frustration and appreciate the opportunity to resolve your issue.
Currently, we are working to launch the Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade for HTC Touch Pro.[...]
However, as soon as the upgrade is launched, we will inform our customers with high profile promotions.
I understand that there are lot of customers waiting for the release and I can assure you that our technical department is working hard to make it available soon. I appreciate your patience and understanding in this regard.[...]
Sincerely,
Jaxon M.
Sprint

The email does not offer an exact launch date for the upgrade, yet it seems that it won't be too long before users of a Touch Pro will be able to enjoy the features that Windows Mobile 6.5 includes. In addition to announcing the work on this upgrade, the email also states that a number of other updates for the handset can be found on Sprint's website.

As many of you might already know, Microsoft announced earlier this year that the Windows Mobile 6.5 platform would become available for a series of already existing handsets on the market. At the same time, the company also stated that manufacturers and carriers would be those to decide which devices were eligible for an upgrade and which weren't.

Until now, no specific number of mobile phones eligible to receive the upgrade has been announced, though there are some handsets expected to get updated, such as the recently launched HTC Touch Pro2, Touch Diamond2, Toshiba TG01 and more. Hopefully, the older Touch Pro will also get updated, so stay tuned to learn more on this as soon as details become available.

Interesting. Of course even if it doesn't happen, there are other options for getting WM 6.5 on your Touch Pro. It's well worth it too.

Ive for months been dealing with HTC corp. as well as HTC Legal Dept. re: Touch Pro. Mainly involving the keyboard issue, as well as WM 6.1 instability. Ive been advised by HTC Corp. that the Touch Pro from Sprint will NOT be eligable for the WM 6.5 upgrade. That comes straight from the horses mouth.

So in regards to what Sprint is telling you. Its all a load of poppycock!

Im fighting to get the Touch Pro recalled due to manufactoring issues, that wont be resolved in existing devices. Going forward, only newly manufactored TP's will have known issues corrected.

Ive sp/w the highest level people at HTC as well as specialists in Mr. Dan Hessys office. Its a shame Sprint wont deal with problamatic mechanical defects.

I already saw the wm6.5 on the training TP at my local Sprint repair center.
The techs said that the update is u to the carrier and not HTC. HTC builds the phone, and some of the software. All other software is from Sprint and so are the updates. When I had My Mogul and I knew about the 6.1 update, people like you said, HTC is not updating the Mogul. Well, it happened. Again, HTC is not the carrier, Sprint is.

Just checked with Sprint on this and they are working on it - No firm date (as of 09/10/10); however, they will announce on their website and via email to their customers.
