Sprint to Offer Training on Various OSes at Open Developer Conference

Wireless carrier Sprint announced on Monday that its Open Developer Conference, slated for October 26-28 in Santa Clara, Calif., would provide developers with insights on various leading platforms available on the market at the moment, including Android, webOS, Java ME, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile. At the same time, the company also announced that the conference was set to offer hands-on coding sessions, along with breakout sessions, event sponsor exhibits and more.

Keynote addresses during the conference will be led by Steve Elfman, president of Network Operations and Wholesale for Sprint, Jason Mackenzie, vice president of HTC America, and Ben Galbraith and Dion Almaer, directors of Developer Relations for Palm, the mobile phone operator added. The keynotes will be focused on Sprint’s open initiatives and their impact on developers. In addition, the Android team will offer an in-depth discussion on different aspects of the platform.

“Our objective with the 2009 Open Developer Conference is to create a forum for mobile app developers and those who develop apps for the desktop to get a taste of what’s possible for them using the tools that Sprint’s developer program provides,” said Len Barlik, vice president of Wireless and Wireline Services for Sprint. “With today’s operating system platforms, powerful new devices – from handsets to embedded devices – and the strength of the Sprint Now Network and 4G, the opportunities are limitless.”

According to the carrier, it is committed to offering the APIs developers need for the creation of rich and innovative applications. At the same time, the company also stated that it made investments in technology and processes that offered both access to capabilities that only the Sprint network has, and hundreds of APIs, including location-based services and presence. Although this is the ninth year when Sprint holds the conference, it is the first time it is opened to the entire developer community, the company stated.
