Sprint, one of the major US-based carriers, is about to announce a new mobile wallet service that will enable its subscribers greater flexibility over how they purchase applications and related premium content

The new mobile wallet solution is following the successful Sprint ID service that was launched a few weeks ago.

While this isn't a financial instrument, subscribers will be able to use it as a container where they can put their financial tools and choose how they want to use them.

“It's not a financial instrument, it's basically a container that allows you to very easily put your own financial instruments into the device and then choose how you want to use them," said Sprint director of open enablement Kevin McGinnis.

“You can put your credit card or debit card information in there, similar to what you would do with an iTunes account. We'll have partners in the mobile wallet as well, so the PayPals, Google Checkouts and Amazons of the world will have their financial instruments and prepaid account capabilities in there as well,” added McGinnis.

It seems that the new mobile wallet solution is very close to the official announcement as McGinnis told FierceMobileContent during an interview at the recent CTIA Enterprise & Applications conference.

More details about the mobile wallet solution will most likely be offered at its annual developer conference, beginning October 26th in Santa Clara, California.

Further, the unannounced mobile wallet solution will add to the Sprint ID service, as McGinnis said publisher partners can charge premium prices for their content, with Sprint providing carrier billing options.

Even though the first Sprint ID packs can be downloaded for free, it's almost certain that as more content is developed publishers will start charging their packs.

Stay tuned for more info about the carrier's annual event and the official announcement of the new mobile wallet solution.
