Unveiled almost a year ago, the CDMA-enabled Samsung Replenish is now receiving the long-awaited Android 2.3 Gingerbread update. Sprint’s eco-friendly smartphone was launched with Android 2.2 Froyo on board, but the carrier decided to pleasantly surprise its customers by deploying this update.

Samsung Replenish is an entry-level Android smartphone, which is powered by a low-performance 600 MHz Qualcomm MSM7627-2 processor and packs 256 MB of RAM, 512 MB of ROM and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB, 2GB memory card included).

Given its outdated hardware configuration it’s really a wonder that Samsung and Sprint were able to fit Android 2.3 Gingerbread in such a short time since the phone’s official release on the market.

As the name suggests, Samsung Replenish is made partially from recycled bio-plastics. The smartphone packs a full portrait QWERTY keyboard and a small 2.8-inch touchscreen that supports 240 x 320 pixels resolution.

Although the Replenish does not have a GSM twin, it’s one of the most popular entry-level Android smartphones available in the United States.

It is also worth mentioning that Samsung Replenish is powered by a high capacity 1600 mAh Li-Ion battery that should provide up to 217 hours of standby time or up to 6 hours of talk time.

Hopefully, once Android 2.3 Gingerbread is installed the smartphone will become smoother and more responsive. According to Sprint, the update increases the operating system’s speed and efficiency, as well as the power management.

In addition, Android 2.3 Gingerbread introduced one-touch word selection and copy / paste and allows users to easily manage their downloads. An SMS messaging fix is included as well.

It appears that Sprint will deploy this update OTA (over the air) in stages, beginning January 4. Samsung Replenish users should receive update notifications on their device, or they can search for the update manually.
