Mobile phone carrier Sprint is set to provide some of its users with a software update in the very near future, a recent announcement made via Twitter states.

The software update would involve the long awaited Android 2.2 Froyo software update for the Samsung Epic 4G smartphone available for purchase on the carrier's network.

“Sprint & Samsung are working to release Froyo for Epic ASAP, but only after it meets rigorous testing criteria to ensure quality experience,” the aforementioned Twitter announcement states (via BGR).

Samsung Epic 4G, a Galaxy S device, is the second WiMAX-capable smartphone that Sprint launched with Google's Android operating system on board, and is currently running under the 2.1 flavor of the OS.

A few months ago, Samsung started to release the Android 2.2 Froyo software update for its Galaxy S owners around the world, but it still has to make the OS upgrade available for those users living in the United States.

Yesterday, T-Mobile USA confirmed officially that it is set to start delivering Android 2.2 Froyo for its Galaxy S users as soon as today, and is seems that Sprint does not want to be left behind.

However, since T-Mobile said that the delay was mainly caused by testing and the inclusion of various specific features, chances are that the release time frame for Froyo on Epic 4G won't be as close as one might want it to be.

Hopefully, Sprint would manage to release the new OS upgrade in a matter of days, if not weeks, and not later than that.

With T-Mobile and Sprint gearing up for the release of this software update, all that would remain to be seen is when would AT&T and Verizon plan on joining the party too.

After all, the software update was already pushed back by more than three months, and we're sure that users do not want to wait too long before being able to upgrade their devices to Android 2.2 Froyo, especially with Android 2.3 Gingerbread already into the wild.
