The third largest wireless telecommunications network in the United States, Sprint Nextel, is asking staff to say ‘no comment’ when queried on the unconfirmed Apple iPhone 5, according to a leaked internal memo.

A telecommunications company based in Overland Park, Kansas, Sprint Nextel Corporation owns and operates Sprint, the third largest wireless telecommunications network in the States, with 52 million customers.

Sprint is eclipsed by Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility, which have 106 million and 99 million subscribers respectively.

Verizon and AT&T are already official carriers of Apple’s iPhone. Just like Sprint, T-Mobile is also believed to have been in talks with Apple to carry the next-generation iPhone 5.

Via AppleInsider now comes word that SprintFeed has obtained an alleged internal memo that aims to coaching dealers on how to respond to questions about the carrier offering the iPhone 5 alongside AT&T and Verizon.

The memo reportedly says, "A recent Wall Street Journal article mentioned that Sprint is getting the iPhone 5. If you're asked by a customer or just talking to friends or family members, you need to avoid making any comment about the iPhone and simple [sic] state ‘no comment.’

The memo specifically instructs employees to answer, "Yes, I saw a few of those reports, I don't have any information to share."

Dealers are told to direct customers to the Sprint.com Newsroom.

Needless to point out, going to so much trouble to train staff on how to respond when queried on the iPhone 5 smells like Sprint carrying the iPhone 5 this fall.

Apple is widely rumored to have scheduled an event this autumn during which the Mac maker will not only unveil the next-generation iPhone 5, but also a cheaper version of the iPhone 4, dubbed by the media iPhone 4S.

Already confirmed are the iOS 5 software and iCloud service set to debut this fall.
